This Day in Masonic History.

July 15, 1940 Robert Pershing Wadlow passes away. He is often known as the "Alton Giant". He would become the tallest man in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. When last measured on 27 June 1940, was found to be 2.72 m (8 ft 11.1 in) tall. His shoe size was 37AA. He weighed 439 lb (199 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood was due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death. A faulty brace irritated his ankle, causing a blister and subsequent infection. Doctors treated him with a blood transfusion and emergency surgery, but his condition worsened and on July 15, 1940, he died in his sleep. He was 22. Wadlow was raised in Franklin Lodge No. 25 in Alton, Illinois in November of 1939. His masonic ring was the largest ever made. He wore a size 25 ring.
